The other day at a poetry reading I learned that dung beetles navigate by the stars. It gives a whole new meaning to Oscar Wilde's line: "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars."
We do have to pay attention to the gutter at some points. But it makes sense that we navigate life by seeking what's beautiful. (Says the art historian.) Anyway, I enjoyed the reading, as well as the confluence of going to hear a poet at the Keats House. I'm navigating life here by seeking things like poetry, music, and art, and I'm lucky enough to be inundated by the latter on a fairly regular basis.
Speaking of which - I gave my first gallery talk today. I mentioned training months ago, but wasn't scheduled until now. It went pretty well - I was glad that people actually showed up, and that it seemed to have an effect on how they viewed the piece. I think it's actually most fun to talk to people who have little knowledge of art history but are genuinely interested in learning. Something to keep in mind as I look for jobs. I'm about to head off on a short trip to Belgium, so I hope to have interesting things to say about that next week.
Love,
Annie
